R.A.
Founding Principal
The son of a meticulous trim carpenter, Mike Hutsell, R.A., grew up around the trade and brings that lineage to every project: an appreciation for quality work and well-crafted spaces. With 16 years in the architecture and construction industry, Mike holds a B.EnvD from the University of Colorado Boulder and is both an ADU Specialist and a Certified Passive House Tradesperson. He spent many years as one of the lead architects at HighCraft Builders, and previously founded his own practice, MH Design.
A Colorado native, Mike was born in Denver and raised in its northern suburbs, with family roots in Boulder, where he later studied. He now lives in Fort Collins with his family. He and his wife have made a practice of fully renovating the homes they live in — most recently a whole-house remodel that added a new attached basement ADU. For Mike, his own home is where an idea gets tested before it’s offered to a client.
Statement from Mike
The first 15% of a project determines 85% of the outcome. I’d rather spend that energy getting the earliest decisions right than spend the rest of a project correcting them.
Measure twice, cut once.

Team

Architectural Designer
Meet Joe Le Flore, the latest addition to the Phos Architecture team. After moving to Colorado for his Interior Architecture studies, Joe found more than just a degree — he found a home. He’s someone who finds peace in life’s small moments and is deeply committed to serving others through his work. Joe believes that every project deserves excellence, regardless of scale. If it matters to you, it matters to Joe.
Statement from Joe
I enjoy all things design and my goal is to keep learning what high-quality design can offer my community, friends, family, and those who are less fortunate. I like to believe that I am a visionary; I always think about the bigger picture and if there is a better way, finding something that lets everyone win.
Trouble no one about their religion; respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.
— An excerpt from a poem by Chief Tecumseh
A note on what we build on
Core Principles
Bridging the gaps the architecture industry consistently leaves open: between design and constructability, between what a client needs and what they know how to ask for, between the project team and the trades. Connecting those dots is the actual service — the drawings are how we deliver it.
A project ends; a relationship doesn’t have to. Every client, contractor, and collaborator is a person with a life that extends far beyond our engagement with them. Long-term trust is the most durable thing we’ll ever build.
Mastery before complexity. Precision, accuracy, coordination, and follow-through aren’t baseline minimums — they’re the product.
I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.
— Bruce Lee
A good deal is good for both sides. We operate with transparency, an abundance mindset, and the belief that clients, contractors, and collaborators should all walk away from an engagement better than they came in.
